يتناول هذا الكتاب وبشكل أساسي اللغويات وطريقة تطورها في القرن التاسع عشر، لم تبدأ الدراسة العلمية للغة في هذا القرن ولكن السنوات التي تدور حول سنة 1900 تعد نقطة تحول في تاريخ الدراسات اللغوية من اللغويات التاريخية إلى اللغويات الوصفية. لقد ناقش المؤلف عملية تأثر اللغة بنظرية داروين والتطورية واستفادتها من علم الأحياء والعلوم الأخرى، ثم تكلم عن المدرسة الألمانية التاريخية والمقارنة ثم انتقل إلى "سوسير" وتأثره بـ"دوركهايم" كما يناقش الكتاب تشومسكي ومدارسه الوصفية مروراً بـ"هلمسلف" و"لامب" و"رايخ" ومدرسة لندن بأقطابها "سويت" و"دانيال جونز" ثم فيرث الذي حول علم اللغة إلى موضوع أكاديمي محدد في بريطانيا ربط فيه بين الصوت والمعنى، كما يتكلم الكتاب عن اللغويين الإيطاليين حيث يقولون بعدم وجود مجال للبحث العلمي في أي فرع من فروع علم اللغة.
