يزداد شأن الحضارات في التاريخ كلما أوغلنا رجوعاً في الزمن لتصبح في بعض الأحيان، وفي بعض العصور القديمة خصوصاً، مصادر التاريخ الوحيدة. فالشعوب كلها، بدافع من العقائد الدفينة أو من رغبات الملوك أو من الحاجات الضرورية الأخرى، تركت آثارها على أرض التي عرفتها، وعلى هذه الآثار يبني المؤرخون معارفهم عن حضارات أمريكا قبل كولومبس، وحضارات الهند والصين والفراعنة والرومان والأتروسكيين وشعوب إفريقية السوداء. في كل يوم يكتشف العلم جديداً عن نكبات الحضارات كاندثار بومبيي تحت رماد فيزوف أو تدمير نينوي أو أفول حضارة المايا، وكلها تعطي الأثري والمؤرخ فرصته الذهبية للوصول إلى الكنوز من المعارف التاريخية، وتتراوح الآثار بين البنية، وبين القطع الأثرية الفنية، أو أدوات العمل والحياة، والتي هي مادة للتاريخ الإنساني، بالإضافة إلى ما تكشف عنه بعض الصور الأثرية من ملامح الحياة العامة والعادات التي لا يسجلها أجحد من القدماء في العادة. إنّ معظم الحضارات البائدة سجلت على آثارها ما تريد البوح به بكتابات شتى، وحين حلّ "شمبوليون" رموز الهيروعليفية أضاف إلى التاريخ ثلاثة آلاف سنة. والكتابات التي استعصت على الحل لا تزال تحتفظ بأسرار التاريخ، وقبل حلّ رموز الكتابات القديمة كان الناس يخترعون التاريخ اختراعاً بالأساطير والخيال حول الآثار. وإن تاريخ الحضارات التي بادرت والعادات التي سادت يحاك حول نواةٍ من الواقع، والتخيلات فيها إنما تبني من معطيات أولية مأخوذة من عصورها.
