ما زال علماء هذه الأمة يعتنون بأمر السيرة النبوية الشريفة تأليفاً وتدريساً، وذلك لما لهذا الجانب من العلم من تأثير عظيم في بعث الحيوية والنشاط في روح هذه الأمة. ولهذا اكثرت الكتابة في هذا الموضوع قديماً وحديثاً، وتنوعت فيه أساليب البحث والعرض. ومن بين هذه الكتب يبرز كتاب "زاد المعاد في هدى خير العباد" للإمام ابن قيم الجوزية، الذي وضعه مؤلفه ليكون الزاد الذي يرجع إليه المسلم بشأن التأسي بالرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم واتباع هديه في كل شؤونه، ولذا شاع اسم آخر لهذا الكتاب، هو "الهدي النبوي". ولا شك بأن هذا الاسم أخذ من مقدمة الكتاب. وقد سلك المؤلف لبيان هذا الهدي في كتابة التقسيم الفقهي: فافتتح الكتاب بالحديث عن النسب الشريف والولادة والمرضعات... ثم المبعث وأول ما نزل، ثم انتقل إلى الحديث عن بعض الشمائل وبعض شؤونه صلى الله عليه وسلم في أمر الطعام واللباس والنوم. ثم كان الحديث عن هدية في العبادات ابتداءً من الطهارة وانتهاء بأداء الحج وأمر الذكر والسلام والاستئذان... ثم انتقل إلى الحديث عن هديه صلى الله عليه وسلم في شأن الجهاد فتحدث عن السابقين الأولين وجهادهم وهجرتي الحبشة. والهجرة إلى المدينة. ثم تحدث عن الغنائم وكيفية تقسيمها وعن الأسرى، وكيفية معاملتهم، ثم عن عقود الصلح والأمان ونقض العهد، ثم ساحة المغازي والبعوث، ثم انتقل المؤلف إلى الحديث عن علاجه صلى الله عليه وسلم للأمراض، ختم الكتاب بالحديث عن أقضيته صلى الله عليه وسلم وأحكامه. وهكذا جاء الكتاب موفياً لمعنى عنوانه وكما قصده مؤلفه. وقد رأب "صالح أحمد الشامي" معهد هذا الكتاب أن السيرة النبوية بمفهومها التقليدي-الذي يعني ترتيب الحوادث بحسب زمنها- لا تظهر واضحة، بل من الصعب تصور ذلك لقارئ الكتاب، لهذا عمد إلى استخراج مادة السيرة من هذا الكتاب، ووضعها في كتاب مستقل ليكون مرجعاً في بابه لمن أراد ذلك. فقام بإعداد هذا الكتاب معتمداً قسم الغزوات أساساً كما وضعه المؤلف ثم جمع إليه ما يتعلق بالسيرة من أجزاء الكتاب الأخرى، واضعاً كل موضوع في مكانه. كما وضع ما حقق المؤلف زمنه من الوقائع في المكان الذي اعتمده، كما وعني بتقسيم الكتاب إلى فصول، ووضع لها عناوين فرعية أيضاً لتسهيل الوقوف على المطلوب منها. أما الاستطرادات موضعها في الحاشية.
