وليد خالدي (1925 - ) هو مؤرخ فلسطيني كتب بغزارة عن اللجوء الفلسطيني وحرب 1948. كما أنه أحد مؤسسي مؤسسة الدراسات الفلسطينية، ويشغل منصب السكرتير العام فيها. ولد الخالدي في القدس وتخرج من جامعة أوكسفورد في 1951. وقد عمل محاضراً في الدراسات السياسية في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت حتى عام 1982، ومن ثم باحث في مركز هارفارد للشؤون الدولية. كما حاضر في جامعة برنستون وجامعة أوكسفورد، وهو زميل في الأكاديمية الأمريكية للآداب والعلوم.

هذا الكتاب محصلة بحث موسع مستند إلى الأراشيف والتاريخ الشفهي. والكتاب مبني على ثلاثين شهادة شخصية لأشخاص من الذين نجوا من مذبحة دير ياسين سنة 1948 والمقاتلين الذين دافعوا عن القرية. كما يتضمن شهادات لعدد من أفراد الجماعات التي ارتكبت المذبحة، الإرغون وعصابة شتيرن والبلماح. وقد جرى الربط بين مختلف هذه الشهادات لتكوين صورة مركبة للأحداث عشية المذبحة، وللمذبحة نفسها ولآثارها. وتتميز هذه الرواية من غيرها من الشهادات بشموليتها وبوضعها المذبحة في إطارها الصحيح، فضلاً عن كونها أول رواية تاريخية تتوصل إلى استنتاج قاطع في شأن عدد الضحايا. ويتضمن الكتاب ست خرائط وستة ملاحق تعدد ضحايا المجزرة وتصنفهم حسب العائلة والجنس والعمر.
