بضربة حظ غير متوقعة وقع المفتاح السحري بيدي حينما قرأت لأحد مؤرخي مقالة يذكر فيها أن شخصية ابن زريق البغدادي مختلقة اخترعها شاعر عباسي، وتبنى كتابة سيرتها الزائفة بعض مؤرخي الأدب. تابعت الموضوع لمدة طويلة في المظان لإشباع فضولي فترسخت لدى قناعة بأنه فعلاً "لم يخلق من نطفة ولم تحبل به امرأة". أصبح من الهين نسبياً إذن إعادة صياغة حياته من جديد، لأنها والحالة هذه خامة أدبية يسهل التناص معها ما دامت لم تكن من لحم ودم. بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن بعثه من الموت يتماشى مع الميثولوجيا السومرية التي حفلت بعودة الموتى كعودة عشتار ومردوخ. إلى هذا الحدّ تكون القصيدة قد بررت منطقياً فكرة إحياء ابن زريق، ولم يبق إلا الوسيلة أو الحيلة الفنية Device حتى تكون معها عملية إحيائه مقنعة بالنسبة للقارئ.
