"جون إيرفين", كما هو معروف عنه, حكمته وذكاءه الفطري لمساعدة الآباء في تبسيط وحل المشكلات التي تثير غضبهم وتجعلهم يفقدون صوابهم. ومن السمات البارزة والمبتكرة التي قَدَّمها المؤلف في هذا الكتاب "نظام التربية باستخدام تعبيرات الوجه" الذي أجرى عليه اختبارات مكثفة. فهذا النظام يستخدم أسلوبًا غير مباشر في تقويم الأبناء ومساعدتهم في تدارك أخطائهم من خلال تجنب المواجهة والصدام المباشر والعمل على التقريب بين أفراد الأسرة الواحدة بدلاً من الانقسام والانشقاق المعهودين في هذه الأيام. يشتمل الكتاب أيضًا على معلومات جديدة وشاملة، خاصة عن المراهقين والأجداد والجدات والهياكل المختلفة للأسر، سواء أكانت أسرة يتولى الاعتناء بها أحد الوالدين أو زوج الأم أو زوجة الأب.
