يحتوي هذا الكتاب على ترجمة عربية لبحث كان الدكتور إسحاق موسى الحسيني قد قدمه باللغة الإنجليزية لينال عليه درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة لندن، وفيه كان قد قدم ترجمة ذاتية لسيرة ابن قتيبة وثقافته وذلك على مدى فصول خمسة أما الفصول الخمسة الأخرى فأفردها لمؤلفات ابن قتيبة في التاريخ والأدب والفقه والنحو...
كان ابن قتيبة يتشدد في حمل تلاميذه على تهذيب أخلاقهم بالإضافة إلى طلبهم العلم، ويؤكد وجوب مجاوزة طلب العلم إلى تأديب النفس. ومن أقواله:
"نحن نستحب لمن قبل عنا وأنتم بكتبنا أن يؤدب نفسه قبل أن يؤدب لسانه، ويهذب أخلاقه قبل أن يهذب ألفاظه، ويصون مروءته عن دناءة الغيبة، وصناعته عن شين الكذب".
وكان ابن قتيبة يرى من واجبة أن يدأب على إقناع تلاميذه بأن في مقدورهم تحصيل كل ما هم في حاجة إليه من المصادر العربية، ومن ثم كتب كتباً عدة مثل: أبيات المعاني، وكتاب العرب، والخيل والأنواء، وعيون الأخبار وغيرها ليثبت أن العرب كانوا يعرفون كل فرع من فروع المعرفة وأنهم تفوقوا على جميع الشعوب بفروع كثيرة أخرى.
