ستالين خطَّط ودبَّر وشارك في السطو على المصارف وعمليات الابتزاز وإحراق المباني والقرصنة والقتل، خلف ستار ما يسمّى العصابات السياسية. ليس برناردو بروفنزانو زعيم المافيا، بل هو جوزف ستالين، "أو سوسو كما كانوا ينادونه" في مرحلة شبابه التي تأخر كثيراً كشفها وإزاحة التعتيم عنها. مرحلة صبا كان خلالها ستالين عضواً في عصابة، وشاعراً وكاهناً متدرّجاً وعاشقاً وقعت ضحيته عشرات النسوة، وخلَّف كثيراً من الأطفال اللقطاء. مرحلة صبا أعدته للنصر وللمآسي ولضراوة السلطة المطلقة، فلم يكن مجرّد أبٍ للعصابات بل منظِّم ومنفِّذ سياسي وخبير في خرق القوى الأمنية التابعة للقيصر. أثّر بلينين ولم يكن يخشى معارضة "ذلك العجوز"! عُزيَ نجاحُ ستالين إلى المزج الغريب بين تربيته بمعهد اللاهوت وعنف الشوارع، فغدا مفكِّراً وقاتلاً بآن. قصص حميمية عن ستالين نجل الإسكافي عام 1878، والمحاضر المثالي عام 1898 واللص عام 1907، والصياد السيبيري المنسي عام 1914، والقاتل الماركسي المتعصب في الثلاثينيات، وفاتح برلين عام 1945. "ستالين الشاب" كتاب جاء حصيلة عشرة أعوام من البحث في 23 مدينة وتسع دول، عن شباب ستالين الغامض. وتضمَّن مذكّرات بخط يده. فضلاً عن التحقيق الذي أجرته معه الكي.جي.بي. حول ابنة الثالثة عشرة التي حملت منه. كذلك عرض ما روته قريبة زوجته الأولى من تفاصيل حياته الزوجية مع زوجته الأولى التي ماتت بسن مبكرة مثيرة إشارات استفهام، وكيف كانت ردة فعل ستالين في مراسم الدفن، حيث ارتمى ليرافق زوجته إلى مثواها الأخير
