"لقد طفت في الأزقة طفلاً وكهلاً وأنا أتنصت إلى وعيد الحلاج وهو يساق إلى الصلب وسمعت المتنبي وهو يتمتم بأبياته راسماً دوائر نارية ومشعلاً الحرائق في كل مكان. والقتلة يطاردونه من حلب إلى شعب بوان ومن الكوفة إلى القاهرة.. أتذكره وهو يفضح أول دكتاتور من ورق.. كافور (الشمس السوداء)، وعندما بدأـ بقراءة (خريف البطريرك) لغارثيا ماركيز كنت أتذكر المتنبي وكافور وأضحك.. وما زلت أضحك.. وما زلت أضحك وأسافر وأنا في عقر داري ومنذ كنت طفلاً بدأت هجرتي من حيث السندباد انتهى واكتشفت أن النص الحقيقي ليس هو النص الذي كتب بل هو النص الذي لم يكتب بعد، وعندما انتهى من كتابة قصيدة أحس أنها ليست القصيدة التي أنا بصددها فأبدأ من جديد, وهكذا مرت حياتي بين بدايات جديدة لا حصر لها، وهكذا ظل النص الحقيقي الذي كنت أريد أن أكتبه لم يكتب بعد وكل هذا الفضاء المسكون بالرحيل والحركة والصرخات والكلمات والأحزان هو الذي منحني القدرة على أن أجد نفسي أن أكون أنا الحاضر والمستقبل- لقد تداخل الزمن بالزمن والوجه بالوجه والمرآة بالمرآة.. فلو لم أكن أنا لكنت أنا.." "على الطرف آخر يقوم شعر لبياتي، فالشعر عند هذا الرجل ينساب انسياباً، وفي انسيابية هذا الشعر، هناك قدرة فائقة على مسك القارئ، بل على مسك القراء بجميع أصنافهم، فضلاً عن أن البياتي استطاع أن يسكب في جل قصائده قضايا عميقة وكبيرة، كان يمكن أن تستعصي على الشعر، ولكن البياتي طوع شعره لمثل هذه القضايا دون أن يبتعد عن جوهر الشعر الحق.
