يقول جورج شولتز في مقدمة كتابه "مذكرات جورج شولتز؛ اضطراب ونصر".: "لا يمكن لأي شخص في العالم أن يدعي امتلاكه لكافة مواصفات وزير الخارجية الناجح. ولكنني أعتقد أن مراحل معينة في حياتي ساعدتني على تقلد مثل هذا المنصب. فقد تعلمت تحمل المسؤولية عندما كنت أشغل منصب رئيس جامعة كبرى. وتعلمت من خبرتي كاقتصادي ناجح أن النجاح في أيّ عمل يتطلب قدراً كبيراً من التفكير والتأني. وتعلمت من خلال خبرتي السابقة، في إدارة نيكسون كيفية التعامل مع البيت الأبيض والكونغرس والإعلام. واكتسبت خبرات كبيرة في التعامل مع جمهور المواطنين. وأقمت علاقات ودية واسعة مع الكثير من شخصيات العالم أثناء عملي كوزير للمالية. وتعلمت حينها الكثير الكثير عن إدارة الاقتصاد العالمي. واستفدت الكثير من خلال ترؤسي لمجلس إدارة شركة "بكتل". وباختصار فقد دخلت البيت الأبيض وأنا أحمل العديد من الخبرات حول أمريكا ودول العالم الأخرى. ومما زاد في إثراء خبراتي عملي كوسيط لحل النزاعات العمالية واستعادة الحقوق المدنية. وأخيراً، فلا أستطيع إغفال دور طفولتي في تشكيل شخصيتي الحالية". لمحة شاملة قدمها جورج شولتز ليمضي القارئ في تتبع مذكراته التي حوت الكثير من الأحداث المهمة وكشفت عن تلك الخلفيات لاستراتيجيات السياسة الأمريكية. يتحدث شولتز في بداية مذكراته عن حال العالم الواقع في فوضى متنقلاً من ثم للحديث عن وقائع الجلسة التثبيتة له كفاعل في السياسة الخارجية للبيت الأبيض الأمريكي ومن ثم يكشف وفي الجزء الثاني من هذه المذكرات عن الأحداث التي وقعت في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وبالتحديد في لبنان والعراق وإيران إبان عهده كوزير للخارجية الأمريكية، ومتحدثاً بإسهاب عن السياسة الأمريكية تجاه عملية السلام التي أخذت حيزها التاريخي من تلك الآونة. مذكرات تحظى بالاهتمام على جميع الأصعدة لما تحمله من حقائق وخفايا وتفاصيل تلك الوقائع التي كان للسياسة الأمريكية أثرها الفعال فيها.
