محمد عبده (1849م - 1905م) عالم دين و فقيه و مجدد إسلامي مصري ، يعد أحد رموز التجديد في الفقه الإسلامي و من دعاة النهضة والإصلاح في العالم العربي والإسلامي ، ساهم بعد التقائه بأستاذه جمال الدين الأفغاني في إنشاء حركة فكرية تجديدية إسلامية في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وبدايات القرن العشرين تهدف إلى القضاء على الجمود الفكري والحضاري و إعادة إحياء الأمة الإسلامية لتواكب متطلبات العصر.
يُعدّ "الإمام محمد عبده" واحدًا من أبرز المجددين في الفقه الإسلامي في العصر الحديث، وأحد دعاة الإصلاح وأعلام النهضة العربية الإسلامية الحديثة؛ فقد ساهم بعلمه ووعيه واجتهاده في تحرير العقل العربي من الجمود الذي أصابه لعدة قرون، كما شارك في إيقاظ وعي الأمة نحو التحرر، وبعث الوطنية، وإحياء الاجتهاد الفقهي لمواكبة التطورات السريعة في العلم، ومسايرة حركة المجتمع وتطوره في مختلف النواحي السياسية والاقتصادية والثقافية.
وقد تأثر به العديد من رواد النهضة مثل عبد الحميد بن باديس ورشيد رضا وعبدالرحمن الكواكبي.

فمن السلوكيات الخاطئة التي قد يُصاب بها الدعاة أثناء سيرهم في الطريق اختلال نياتهم، وفسادها في بعض الأحيان وافتقادها إلى الإخلاص، وإصابتها بشوائب الشرك والرياء. والإخلاص هو أمر في أعماق القلب، لا يطلع عليه أحد إلا الله تبارك وتعالى، ولكنه يتجلى في أمور عديدة، وثمرته تبدو واضحة جلية في مجال الدعوة. ومن هنا نرى الفرق واضحاً بين رجلين تساويا في أمور كثيرة ولكنهما اختلفا في الإخلاص، ويتجلى الإخلاص عند الداعية في أن لا يريد من دعوته إلا الله.
