"تعد رواية “الخاطئ” التي صدرت في العام 1912 أقصر روايات د. هـ. لورانس ، والكثير من أحداث الرواية مستلهم من قصة حب قصيرة جرت بين اثنين من زملائه، وقد صرف النقاد الكثير من الجهد على تحليل عناصر السيرة في الكتاب دون أن يدركوا أن لورانس كان يكتب عملاً من تجربة متخيلة يتجذر أصلها في الواقع. إن هذه الرواية هي إحدى الارتدادات التي اعتصرها لورانس من ذاته في وجه الخطايا القاتلة المميتة التي يقترفها الإنسان في أوكار الضعف الإنساني، إزاء عصر الانحطاط، عصر اللاتوازن بين الجسد والروح. ورواية “الخاطئ” التي اختلف النقاد كثيرًا في تقويمها وفي مكانتها بين آثار لورانس الكبرى تظل إحدى لوحاته الخلابة، فهو قبل كل شيء، وبعد كل شيء فنان يهبنا الكثير بسخاء، ويشدنا إليه ويصور لنا العفة المبتورة، فمع كل هذا الإطار الذي يؤطر رواية “الخاطئ” لا تستطيع أن تبتسم، بل البسمة تستحيل إلأى إشفاق، إلى تطلع مجنون داخل الذات. ذلك هو د. هـ. لورانس الذي آلمته جميع الآلهة المزيفة داخل الإنسان وخارجه، فاستخدم في وجهها كل الأسلحة … كل الأسلحة حتى البذيئة منها، وذلك أن الآلهة المزيفة لم تعد كما كانت في عصور النور تسكن القمم، بل تعوي مصابة بالكراهية والبغض وتعيش في الحضيض. تهدف الرواية إلى القول أن انعدام التوازن في العلاقة بين الرجل والمرأة يضعف الشريكين معًا، وفرض الرغبات من أحد الطرفين لا بد أن يؤدي في النهاية إلى انتضار أحد الشريكين. "
