أردت أن أكتب كتابي هذا لأسباب عديدة: كتخليد لذكرى الذين قتلوا من أهلي، كنحيب صامت عليهم وبكاء يقطر مباشرة من روحي، كتفجير سخط لأنني اضطررت إلى أن أقضي سنوات طفولة عصيبة وأن أعيش وأنا أركض بشكل غير طبيعي وليس ببطء، أن أقتلع جذوري وأن أعيش غريبة في بلاد مضيافة ولكنها بعيدة ومن جنس آخر. كرجاء وتوسل إلى قوى التقدم بأن يقوموا بكل ما يمكنهم ليمنعوا تكرار وعودة السنوات العصيبة إلى أي مكان. كضحك مُرّ ومتهكم يسخر من الظالمين عندما يحاولون ويتجاسرون على أن يُظهروا أنفسهم بأنهم هم الضحايا. وأخيراً صدّقت بأنه الواجب علىّ أن أكتب كشيء قليل مقابل الإرث الثقيل الذي تركه لي والدي وأختي القتلى. قدموا حياتهم إلى حيث هم كانوا يؤمنون بأن يفعلوا، حقهم المشروع لا يقبل الجدل. بالنسبة لي سواء رغبت أم لم أرغب تركوا لي مقتلهم إرثاً. هكذا قررت أن أكتب متسائلة ... أسأل كل أولئك الذين تلقوا ويتلقون إرثاً مشابهاً لإرثي هذا، وأينما وجدوا سواء في بلدي أو في شيلي أو نيكاراغوا أو لبنان أو فلسطين أو أفريقيا أو في أي مكان آخر. ماذا سنفعل بهذا الإرث الثقيل؟ هل نقيس الحقد قياساً ونسقي الانتقام بالدم أم نجعله المحارب الذي لا يتعب وحامي السلام الذي لا ينام؟
