الكتاب من تقديم وتحقيق أبو الوفا الأفغاني. إن من أقدم ما صنف في السير كتاب السير للإمام الأعظم أبي حنيفة النعمان بن ثابت الكوفي رضي الله عنه. أملاه على أصحابه أبي يوسف، وزفر، واسد بن عمرو، والحسن بن زياد اللؤلؤى، وحفص بن غياث النخعى، ومحمد بن الحسن الشيباني، وعافية بن يزيد، وحماد ابنه، وأضرابهم من الأئمة الكبار. فرووه عنه، وزادوا فيه، ورتبوه، وهذبوه حتى نسب إليهم، نحو كتاب السير للحسن بن زياد، والسير الصغير للإمام محمد بن الحسن. قيل "لما وقع السير الصغير بيد أبي عمرو عبد الرحمن الأوزاعي إمام الشام فنظر فيه قال: "لمن هذا الكتاب؟" فقيل: "لمحمد العراقي". فقال: ما لأهل العراق والتصنيف في هذا الباب! فإنه لا علم لهم بالسير ومغازى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وكانت من جانب الشام والحجاز دون العراق، فإنها محدثة فتحا" فبلغ مقالة الأوزاعي محمداً رضي الله عنهما فغاظه ذلك ففرغ نفسه حتى صنف هذا الكتاب. وصنف الإمام الأوزاعي رضي الله عنه كتاباً رد فيه على سير الإمام أبي حنيفة رضي الله عنه، ولما بلغ صاحبه الإمام أبا يوسف رد عليه واحتج عليه بحجة حسنة. وكتاب الرد على سير الأوزاعي للإمام أبي يوسف رضي الله عنه نادر جداً لا يوجد له إلا نسخة واحدة في الهند. فرأت لجنة إحياء المعارف النعمانية إحياءه ونشره، رغبة في تعميم نفعه.
