تدور أحداث هذه القصة حول الأرملة الشابة "إليزابيث يركلي" التي تعيش مع طفليها "مارك وماجي" في منزلهم بعد وفاة زوجها "جون" في حادثة مفاجئة منذ سنتين. تعمل هذه المرأة في محل خاص بها ليل نهار ولا تفعل شيئاً غير هذا. تفتقد هذه المرأة الإحساس بالحب ومن ثم تلجأ إلى أحلام اليقظة لتعبر عنا بداخلها من عواطف. تطلب منها أختها "شدو -التي تعلم أكثر منها عن أمور الحياة على الرغم من أنها الصغرى- أن تبحث بين زبائنها عن رجل يملأ الفراغ العاطفي الذي تحس به وتشجعها أيضاً على كتابة أحلامها ونشرها مقابل مبلغ من المال دون أن تعلن أن اسمها. يقع اختيار "إليزابيث" على اثنين من الرجال: "آدم كافنوخ" ذلك الرجل الجذاب الثري و"راندولف" جارها المتحفظ والرزين. ترى من سيحقق لها أحلامها؟ وكيف؟ ما السر الذي تعلمه "إليزابيث" عن راندولف"؟ كيف علم ذلك الرجل نفسه بأمر كتابتها لأحلامها؟ ما العرض الذي اقترحه "آدم كافنوخ" على "إليزابيث" تلك المرأة المتحفظة والرزينة. ذلك ما ستعرفه -عزيزي القارئ- لدى متابعتك أحداث هذه الرواية الممتعة.
