أديب وكاتب سوري ولد في مدينة الرقة سنة 1918، عمل في الطب والسياسة إضافة للأدب.
درس في الرقة وحلب ودمشق وتخرج من جامعة دمشق - طبيباً عام 1945.
انتخب نائباً عن الرقة عام 1947.
تولى عدداً من المناصب الوزارية في وزارة الثقافة والوزارة الخارجية والإعلام عام 1962, يعد أحد أهم أعلام القصة والرواية في سوريا والعالم العربي، وقد أصدر أول مجموعاته القصصية عام 1948 بعنوان بنت الساحرة.
و كان له أقاصيص أخرى مثل ساعة الملازم و قناديل إشبييلية.
كتب عبد السلام العجيلي القصة والرواية والشعر والمقالة.
بلغ عدد أعماله أربعة وأربعين كتاباً حتى 2005 من أهمها الليالي والنجوم (شعر 1951)، باسمة بين الدموع (رواية 1958)، الحب والنفس (قصص 1959)، فارس مدينة القنطرة (قصص 1971)، أزاهير تشرين المدماة (قصص 1974)، في كل واد عصا (مقالات 1984).
أحاديث الطبيب (قصص 1997)، ومجهولة على الطريق (قصص 1997).
تعتبر كتابات الكاتب الكبير العجيلي في المجال الادبي من ضمن أغنى وأهم الروايات الأدبية العربية في تاريخ الأدب العربي وقد ترجمت معظم أعماله إلى اللغات الإنكليزية والفرنسية والإيطالية والأسبانية والروسية، وتدرس العديد من أعماله في الجامعات والمدارس ويعد مرجع من مراجع الادب العربي.

قطعت، وأنا أكتب هذه الكلمات، من العمر خمسة وثمانين عاماً. وقارب عمري في ممارسة الأدب كتابة سبعين عاماً، إذا اعتبرت بدء هذه الممارسة أول قصة كتبتها ونشرتها، وذلك في عام 1936. هذان العمران الطويلان، في الحياة وفي العمل الأدبي، يفسران بعض التفسير وفرة النتاج الذي يحمل اسمي والذي أحاول جمعه في ما يسمى بالأعمال الكاملة.
أقول الأعمال الكاملة وأنا لا أدري منذ الآن كم سيكون مقدار انطباق تلك الصفة عليها. إذ إن وفرة ما كتبته في العمرين الطويلين اللذين ذكرتهما أعلاه تتيح مجالاً واسعاً للتعرض للنقض.
لن أنشر كل ما كتبته في هذا الصنف بين أعمالي الكاملة وإنما سأسعى إلى أن أثبت نماذج منها قد تعجب القراء وقد يهتم بها النقاد بصورة خاصة.
