نبذة النيل والفرات: يشير مصطلح التوحد أو (الذاتوية) إلى الاضطراب الذي تنتج عنه بعض المظاهر السلوكية لدى الأطفال، كالانسحاب الاجتماعي، والسلوك المكروه، وضعف تطور اللغة, ويتميز هذا الاضطراب عادة باضطراب حاد في النمو قد يكون ناجم عن سبب عصبي، واضطراب في التواصل مع العالم الخارجي لغة وانفعال. وقد انتشر هذا المرض بشكل كبير كما أنه يصيب الأولاد الذكور أكثر من الإناث بمعدل أربعة أضعاف ويعزو الباحثون أسبابه إلى عاملين رئيسيين أولاً: عوامل جينية وراثية، وثانياً: عوامل تلوثات البيئة مثل المعادن السامة وغيرها. ويتسم الطفل الذاتوي بأنماط من السلوك غير السوي فقد يبالغ في الحركة الرتيبة وقد ينطوي على ذاته كما يتشبث بكلمات بعينها ويتشبث بأشياء محددة والمعايير المعتمدة في تشخيص الذاتوية يتركز معظمها حول ملاحظة سلوك الطفل.. ولعل هذا الكتاب يعتبر مدخلاً مفيداً للتعرف إلى هذا الاضطراب، وكيفية تشخيصه والتعامل معه. وهو يشكل عوناً للأهل الذين يعاني أحد أبنائهم من هذا المرض.
