السمة الأولى التي تسم رواية "الجمجمة الذهبية" للكاتب نبيل سالم من حيث الشكل والمضمون أنها موجهة للفتيان، فتهتم بهذه الفئة العمرية التي سقطت من اهتمامات الأدباء، فأعادها الكاتب سالم إلى الضوء بهذا العمل الفريد والمتميز.
في هذه القصة يطرح الكاتب واحدة من القيم العربية الأصيلة التي يتناقلها التراث العربي بحكايات شعبية، وقصص، ومرويات، فيتوقف عند أهمية (الحكمة) في الحياة ليقول بالأحداث والوقائع أنها تفوق حاجة الإنسان إلى المال والثروة.
في تظهير الحكاية يروي الكاتب سالم حكاية فتى ينشغل بفتح صندوق تركه له جدّه الذي فارق الحياة، ويعيش إثر إصراره على فتح الصندوق صنوفاً من المغامرات في الغابة يمر فيها بظروف قاسية ويتعلم فيها أنواعاً من الحكمة ويكتشف خلالها الحاجة إلى رجاحة العقل والحكمة.
وتتجلى فكرة القصة التي تأتي في خمسة عشر فصلاً، في جملة ترد على لسان جد الفتى الذي يغيب ويحضر صوته في القصة بقوله: "يا ولدي إذا خُيّرت بين الثروة والحكمة فلا تخطىء الإختيار"، مقدماً عبر ذلك مجموعة مهمة من القيم الإجتماعية - الأخلاقية التي يجب على الناشئة العرب أن يدركوها ويتعلموها منذ الصغر.
وهكذا يصطنع نبيل سالم خطاباً قصصياً بسيطاً يتناسب مع الفئة العمرية المستهدفة، فهو يستخدم راوياً واحداً كليّ العلم، يروي بصيغة الغائب حيناً والحاضر حيناً آخر، ويستخدم لغة سردية سلسة، يسهل على الفتية تلقيها، سواء على مستوى المفردات أو التراكيب، مع إفساح مساحة للتخيل في سياق القص وخاصة أن الكاتب يلجأ إلى حكايا مرتبطة بالأسطورة والموروث السردي (التراث)، وتساعد الرسوم التي تزيّن مضمون وصفحات القصة مكوناً أساسياً في بناء سرد الأحداث، إذ ترسم شخصيات القصة، وتصور مشهديات من أحداثها داخل الحكاية.
