تحظى دراسة العلاقات الأمريكية-الصينية باهتمام متزايد؛ فقد كان لمسار العلاقة الأمريكية-الصينية خلال الحرب الباردة تأثير في الساحة الإقليمية في آسيا، وكذلك على صعيد التوازنات الدولية بين القوتين العظميين آنذاك؛ أي الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية والاتحاد السوفيتي. واليوم فإن المضمون الذي يمكن أن يستقر عليه سلوك الدولتين حيال مجالات التفاعل القائمة أو المحتملة سواء كان صراعاً أو تعاوناً سيكون له تأثير في الساحة الدولية، ومكوناتها بشكل يصعب تجاوزه. وقد تمت مناقشة موضوع هذا الكتاب في ثلاثة أجزاء: يتعامل الجزء الأول مع العلاقة الأمريكية-الصينية من منظور تاريخي، سعى خلاله لتحديد أبرز المقدمات والمدخلات ذات العلاقة بهذه الفترة، وما انتهت إليه تفاعلات الدولتين من الدخول في مرحلة التعاون. أما الجزء الثاني، فقد تناول التطورات التي شهدتها العلاقة الأمريكية-الصينية خلال فترة ما بعد الحرب الباردة التي سيكون لها تأثير في التفاعلات اللاحقة بين الدولتين. وينصرف الجزء الثالث إلى البحث في مجالات تفاعل العلاقة الأمريكية-الصينية، التي ستتلاقى أو تبتعد عندها الرؤى المتقابلة للكيفية التي يتم بها تحقيق وحماية المصالح بالشكل الذي يحدد المسار السياسي المحتمل لهذه العلاقة.
