يعنى هذا الكتاب بمسائل اللغة، ولاسيّما تلك المتعلّقة بالبحث في خصائص شكل التعبير اللغوي من نواحيه المختلفة، وهو ما بات يُعرف بــ"علم الأسلوب" أو "الأسلوبيات".
وإذا كانت تعريفاتُ الأسلوبيات متنوّعةً ومتباينةً بين باحثٍ وآخر، فإنّ نقطة التقاطع بين وجهات النظر المتعدّدة تبدو واضحةً إلى حدّ كبير، وهي أنّ الأسلوبيات "علم الخصائص الشكليّة في الأقوال"، وفقاً لما أشار إليه بيار لرتوما في هذا الكتاب الذي تميز بالتتبُّع المعمّق لميزات أشكال القول، وبصوغ استنتاجاتٍ مهمةٍ ودقيقةٍ مستندةٍ إلى أمثلةٍ تطبيقيةٍ مستقاةٍ من آثار إبداعية عديدة.
إنّه كتاب يخاطبُ الباحثين والطلاب في وقتٍ واحد وتساهم ترجمته في إغناء المكتبة العربيّة، ولا سيّما في مجال الدراسات المنضوية إلى هذا الميدان من العلوم الإنسانية.
وقد قسم المؤلف كتابه إلى قسمين تفرعت منها عدة فصول وفق ما يلي: القسم الأول: الفصل الأول: "فعل القول وأركانه"، الفصل الثاني: "الألسن"، الفصل الثالث: "المنطوق والمكتوب"، الفصل الرابع: "الإضمار"، الفصل الخامس: "الأزمنة"، الفصل السادس: "أحكام [الكلام]، الفصل السابع: "التسلسل والبناء في القول".
أما القسم الثاني: الفصل الأول: "الأجناس - الأصول وتصنيفها"، الفصل الثاني: "المحادثة"، الفصل الثالث: "الخطبة"، الفصل الرابع: "الرسالة"، الفصل الخامس: "الأجناس المحاكية: الجنس المسرحي"، الفصل السادس: "الجنس الحكائي"، الفصل السابع: "المثل"، الفصل الثامن: "الشعر"، "خاتمة".
