يحوي هذا الكتاب روايات يمتزج فيها الواقع بالخيال العلمي في أحداث كأنها حقيقة، وتناقض في قصة (تلك الفتاة القبيحة) ظاهرة القبح شكلاً والنبل الداخلي، ظاهرة الجمال الشكلي المخفي ، الوحشية والشر ، في ولادة طفلة قبيحة يهجرها أبواها، ويتخلى عنهما أولادهما الذكور ، وتكبر الفتاة وتتبرع لأبيها بكلية منها تسبب موتها. وتتحدث قصة (طيور الليل) عن طمع الأغنياء بجهود الفقراء، وعن إرهاب الوطاويط طيور الليل الأغنياء بقتل مأجوريهم للجريمة، وتستعاد الحقوق. وتبحث قصة (صندوق الحكمة) في ممارسة عالمة مقدرة التركيز الذهني عند موتها، بإعلام صبي ذكي عن صندوق تدخر فيه أسرار علمها، فيساعده في دراسة الكيمياء، ومتابعة أبحاث العالمة الراحلة. وتتحدث قصة (الأفعى والقطة المتوحشة) عن أفعى تحمي شاعراً في بيته المنعزل من الحيوانات والحشرات بابتلاعها، وترحل بلا عودة حين طلب الشاعر منها الرحيل. وتقتل القطة المحبوسة خطأ صاحبها بشراسة وتهاجم القرى، فتقتلها الشرطة في كمائن. وتروي قصة (تلك الأيام العجيبة) أحداثاً ممتعة لفتاة تنقذ أفعى من البرد ، فتكافئها الأفعى بلدغ مجرم يحاول إيذائها وتميته. وتتحدث قصة ( أقوى من الموت) عن ولادة طفل من ميتة القبر، في معجزة تبين مصارعة المادة الحية الموت حتى النهاية. وتبحث قصة (الجثث المحنطة) في هجر أولاد عالمة لها، وموت آخرهم فتحنطه وتستدرج أصدقاءه فتحنطهم ، وتحاول تحنيط طالب مستأجر عندها، تحلم أنه يضيقه ، فتهرع إليه وتنقذه.
