منذ أن أدرك الإنسان قيمة الكلمة؛ ارتقى فوق المستوى الحيواني ليصبح ناطقاً مميزاً عن سواه من الكائنات. فاللغة من أهم عناصر الفكر. والكتابة هي أهم وسيلة انتقل الفكر بها من جيل لآخر. ما كان للحضارة المعاصرة أن تكون لولا هذا الاكتشاف الإنساني الرائع للكتابة والإدراك الواعي لدور اللغة وسبر أسرارها. وفي هذا الكتاب أجزاء ثلاثة تتناول بعض الجوانب اللغوية الأساسية التي قد تزود القارئ بمعلومات أَلْسُنيّة جديدة أو بطروحات حديثة حول قضايا تهم الطالب والباحث والمثقف العربي. يتناول الجزء الأول الكتابة ونشأتها ومراحل تطورها عبر التاريخ، ومشاكلها والحلول التي عرضت عبر فترات مختلفة من تاريخ الحضارة. والجزء الثاني يتناول النظام اللغوي من حيث البناء الصوتي. ويتناول الجزء الثالث دلالة الكلمة، حيث تعتبر الكلمة الأساس الأهم الذي تقوم عليه اللغة، فتعرض مشكلة المصطلح والمعجم وتطوره، وقضية الإعراب وأهميته وغيرها من قضايا لغوية مهمة. بذلك يكون الكتاب بمادته عوناً للدارسين في مجالات اللغة والأدب والتاريخ والثقافة، حيث استخدم فيه المؤلف أسلوباً بعيداً عن التعقيد واللغة المملة وذلك حرصاً على جعل المادة محبّة للقارئ بشكل عام.
