أكد الفكر الفلسفي الديني، عبر مراحل تطوره، أن لهذا الكون قوة خارقة، أوجدته من العدم، وما برحت تحكمه منذ الأزل، وتتصرف في شؤونه، واتفقت كل الأديان على أن تلك القوة التي خلقت الحياة على الأرض سوف تنهي هذه الحياة في يوم من الأيام. كما أكدت على علامات معينة سوف يكون ظهورها نذيراً بنهاية العالم. وفي هذا الكتاب محاولة بسيطة لدراسة جانب من جوانب الفكر الديني، ويتمثل هذا الجانب بدراسة كيفية نهاية العالم ونزول المنقذ من قبل الإله لإنقاذ الأخيار من البشر.
وقد اختار الباحث تلك الناحية لهذه الدراسة من خلال ثماني ديانات هي المصرية القديمة والهندوسية، والبوذية والجينية، والزرادشتية، واليهودية، والمسيحية، والإسلامية، وقد كان هذا الاختيار تابعاً لتأكيد هذه الأديان على أن للعالم نهاية لا ريب فيها، وأنه سوف تصاحب هذه النهاية نزول منقذ بواسطة القدرة الإلهية، لإنقاذ الأخيار بعد أن يصيب الأرض الدمار ويحل فيها الفساد.
