كان حنين نفاق: اندلعت الحرب في الجزائر معهما، تواصلت أمام أعينهما، لم تؤثّر فيهما إلا قليلاً؛ كانا يقومان بشيء ما أحياناً، لكنّهما عموماً كان غير مُضطَرَّيْن إلى فعل ذلك، طالما اعتبرا أنّ حياتهما ومُستقبلهما ومفاهيمهما ستختَلّ.
كان هذا صحيحاً نسبيّاً فيما مضى: كانا في سنوات الجامعة يتصرّفان بتلقائيّة أكبر، بل أحياناً بحماس كبير، فيحضران الإجتماعات ويشاركان في التظاهرات التي وسمت بداية الحرب، نداء المُحافظين، وخصوصاً، انتشار أفكار "ديغول".
وفوراً نشأت علاقة بين التحرّك، رغم أنّه كان محدوداً، وبين الأمر الذي تمّ لأجله، ولا يمكن بحال مؤاخذتهما على إرتكاب الأخطاء في تلك الفترة: استمرّت الحرب، وتركّزت أفكار "ديغول"، وانقطع جيروم وسيلفي عن الدّراسة.
