تحتفي الأمم بأعلامها ومشاهيرها، الذين أثروا تاريخها فتفرد لذلك الموسوعات والمعاجم التي تؤرخ لتواريخ ولاداتهم ووفياتهم، وأهم أعمالهم وإنجازاتهم. والمسلمون من بين تلك الأمم التي عنيت بهذا الجانب، إذ تتوفر في المكتبة العربية أعداد لا تحصى من تلك المعاجم والموسوعات. غير أن أعلام الهند من الذين كان لهم دوراً كبيراً في نشر الثقافة والفكر الإسلاميين في القارة الهندية وغيرها من بقاع الأرض، لم يحظوا بمثل هذا الاهتمام، وإن وردت تراجم البعض منهم في كتب الأعلام المتفرقة. فكان من الضروري جمعها في كتاب واحد تيسيراً على الراغب بمعرفة هؤلاء الأعلام ومآثرهم.
وموسوعة (أعلام الهند) هذه تفي بالحاجة إذ عمد المؤلف إلى جمع ما تفرّق في أماكن شتى من تراث الهند. وأجزاء هذه الموسوعة تصدر تباعاً، حيث رتبها المؤلف حسب حروف الأبجدية مبتدئاً بحرف الألف.
