لقد اختلف علماء النفس فيما بينهم حول تعريف الشخصية حتى بلغ عدد هذه التعريفات نحو أربعين تعريفاً، لكن رغم هذا الإختلاف البسيط إن الشخصية تعني جميع الصفات النفسية والعقلية والسلوكيات والأفكار والمعتقدات والدوافع، ومن هنا فالمعنى لا يمكن تحديده بشكل دقيق.
وقد جاء هذا الكتاب في خمسة عشر فصلاً، جاء الفصل الأول لدراسة مفهوم الشخصية والهوية، والثاني لدراسة طبيعة الشخصية، والفصل الثالث لدراسة أنظمة بناء الشخصية والمقاييس الفسيولوجية، والرابع ناقش تصنيف الشخصية والنظريات كنظرية إيزنك وفرويد وأريكسون، والخامس لدراسة أنماط الشخصية المتنوعة.
أما الفصل السادس، فدرس الأنثروبولوجيا الثقافية، ومراحل تكوين الشخصية عند الطفل، والفصل السابع، درس فيه نظرية فرويد في تكوين الشخصية؛ أما الفصل الثامن، فقد درس فيه طريقة تكون الشخصية وآثار البيئة فيها، والتاسع تحدث عن الشخصية والنمو الإجتماعي في مرحلة الرضاعة.
أما الفصل العاشر فتحدث عن الشخصية والنمو الإجتماعي، في مرحلة ما قبل المدرسة، والحادي عشر الشخصية في مرحلة الطفولة المتوسطة، أما الفصل الثاني عشر فتحدث عن إضطرابات الشخصية، والثالث عشر ناقش قضية الشخصية القوية، أما الرابع عشر: فتحدث عن علم الجرافولوجي، أما الفصل الأخير فقد ناقش قضية علم الفراسة وتحليل الشخصيات.
