(الطير الأبابيل) رواية سياسية، تكاد تكون ملحمة أدبية إنسانية كبيرة تصور مشاهدات الموت المجاني، وقتل الإنسان لأخيه الإنسان، تحت شعارات زائفة، تنتهي بكوارث إنسانية فاجعة.
يتخذ الروائي من شخصية الشاب "فهد الجبران" الذي يدرس هندسة الكمبيوتر في جامعة لونس أنجلوس، نموذجاً للتعبير عن اختلاف العقائد والبشر، والنظرة نحو الآخر يقول "البشر مختلفون منذ ان وجدوا، لكنا يجب أن ننظر إلى الصورة بكاملها، لا أن نجتزئ منها وا وافق الهوى..." وهكذا وبأسلوب رمزي مبطن، ونجيال متقد يضع الراوي بطلة في رحلة سفر مشتركة على الطائرة التي تقل محمد عطا وعبد العزيز العمري رموز أحداث 11 سبتمبر في رحلة الموت "كلنا مسافرون" حينها لم يدرك فهد المعنى على الفور، ظاناً أن عبد العزيز يحادث نفسه "كلنا مسافرون يا فهد". وفي مشهد جريء يصور الروائي لحظة اقتراب الطائرة من ناطحات السحاب المتجاورتان كتوأمين "تتجه الطائرة إلى إحداهما كباز ينقض على الطريدة، تلتحم بها، انفجار.. لا شيء".
وفي هذا السياق يتعرض الروائي لمسائل شغلت بال الرأي العام العالمي وتبدل النظرة اتجاه العرب والمسلمين، والصعاب التي واجهها الطلاب العرب المسلمون في أمريكا عقب الحادثة، والتخبط الذي وقعت به الولايات المتحدة وهي تبحث عمن تلصق به التهمة....
