ولد في بولندا (أو روسيا البيضاء حسب الحدود الدولية الحالية) وكان اسمه شمعون بيرسكي (שמעון פרסקי).
كان أبوه تاجر أخشاب أما أمه فكانت أمينة مكتبة ومعلمة للغة الروسية.
هاجرت عائلته إلى فلسطين في عام 1934 (أيام الانتداب البريطاني) واستقرت في مدينة تل أبيب التي أصبحت في تلك الأيام مركزا للمجتمع اليهودي.
تعلم بيرس في مدرسة "غيئولا" في تل أبيب ثم واصل دراساته في المدرسة الزراعية "بن شيمن" قرب مدينة اللد.
في 1940 انضم إلى مؤسسي كيبوتس "ألوموت" الواقع بين مرج بيسان وبحيرة طبريا.
في 1947 انضم إلى قيادة الهجاناه وكان مسؤولا عن شراء العتاد والموارد البشرية.
في ذلك الحين عمل مع دافيد بن غوريون وليفي أشكول من أهم السياسيين الإسرائيليين واللذان أصبحا من كبار زعماء دولة إسرائيل بعد تأسيسها في مايو 1948، فانضم بيرس إلى مجموعة أنصار بن غوريون حيث يعتبره بيرس حتى اليوم راعيه السياسي.

يحتوي هذا الكتاب على حوارات صحفية أجراها روبرت لنيل الكاتب في مجلة نيوزويك الأميركية ومؤلف روايات معروفة مع رجل معروف جداً على الصعيد السياسي وحائز على جائزة نوبل إنه شمعون بيريز، وهو واحد وكما يقول المؤلف من الذين كان يطمح بإجراء مقابلة معهم، ومحاورتهم وهدفه من ذلك هو رسم صورة منطقية مفصلة عن هذا الرجل الذي شاءت الظروف أن يكون في قلب أكثر الأحداث السياسية والإنسانية إثارة في القرن العشرين، عودة (هجرة) الشعب اليهودي إلى (أرضه)، إنشاء الدولة اليهودية رغم كل الظروف ومستقبل إسرائيل، فقد أراد أن يرى العالم من خلال رؤية بيريز، وأراد الاقتراب أكثر فأكثر من شخص شخصيته.
