أدت الثورة العلمية التي حدثت في شتى المجالات والحقول العلمية إلى نشوء تخصصات دقيقة سرعان ما اتسعت مجالاتها ولتشكل حقولاً معرفية على مستوى كبير من الأهمية وتخطى باهتمام العلماء والباحثين المتخصصين والوراثة الجزيئية أحد الفروع العلمية الحديثة الذي يستعد إلى كل علوم الوراثة ويرتبط معها بوشائج عميقة حتى ليمكن القول أن الأساس النظري لهذا العلم قد تم وضعه على يد مندل الذي وجد خلال أبحاثه أن الصفات تمر عبر وحدات معينة موجودة في الخلايا وتنتقل من جيل إلى آخر. والمؤلف أحد العلماء البارزين والمرموقين في هذا المجال وقد عرف بكثرة أبحاثه ومؤلفاته، ويعرض في هذا الكتاب لموضوع الوراثة الجزيئية وبأسلوب يتناسب وحاجة المتعلمين والذين لا يمتلكون خبرة كبيرة في هذا الحقل، وقد جاء الكتاب معزز بالرسوم التوضيحية لتسهيل مهمة الدارسين. والكتاب يقع في اثني عشر فصلاً، يبحث خلالها المؤلف في الأساس النظري والخلوي للتوريث، وفي الطبيعة الوراثية للحامض النووي منقوص الأوكسجين والتوليف الكيميائي للحامض النووي، وبناء الحامض النووي ويخصص المؤلف بعض صفحات الكتاب للحديث الاستنساخ واستنساخ الحامض النووي الريبوزي المرسال، وعن أهمية منطقتي المحفز والمهني في عملية الاستنساخ كما لا يغفل الحديث عن تنظيم تعبير المورثات والطفرات الوراثية وإصلاح الحامض النووي والهندسة الوراثية، والوراثة الجزيئية للسرطان.
