في الذاكرة التاريخية للبشر قصص خالدة, يعودون إليها, يستلهمونها, يستعيدونها فيمتلئون بالأمل من جديد, أو يمسهم طائف من الأسى واليأس لكثرة ما تكررت القصص وتكرر فشلها. تلك هي قصص الأنبياء والقديسين والأبطال التي صاغتها ذاكرة البشر مرات لا تحصى, وأعطاها خيالهم معاني وألواناً لا تنفذ. وقصة "سبارتاكوس" واحدة من هذه القصص: عبد يوناني تراقي لا يملك أسباب القوة, استطاع أن يجمع من حوله جيشا من العبيد المقهورين ينتمون إلى أجناس ولغات مختلفة: أفارقة ويهود ويونانيين.. إلخ, وأن يقودهم إلى التمرد والثورة على روما ومظالمها, بعد أن جمعتهم روما من بقاع العالم, وحولتهم بغناها وحضارتها اللاهية, إلى جنس آخر أدنى من البشر وأقرب إلى الحيوانات. وهكذا صار اسم سبارتاكوس رمزاً لطلب الحرية في أقسى الظروف. ولم يكن الروائي الأمريكي هوارد فاست Howard Fast بطبيعة الحال, أول -ولن يكون الآخر- فنان التفت إلى قصة سبارتاكوس الخالدة, لكنه من غير شك كان أبرز من صاغها في إطار رؤية جديدة وخاصة للتاريخ الإنساني.
