تقترب الرواية من تخوم الشعر وتخوم السيرة الذاتية، وأبطالها هما الشاعران الشهيران ألفريد تنيسون وجون كلير، والطبيب الشهير "ماثيو آلن". أحداث الرواية حقيقية ووقعت عام 1840م، فى غابة "إيبنج" بأطراف لندن، وتدور الأحداث حول شاعر الطبيعة "جون كلير"، الذى يجد نفسه بعد أعوام من الضياع والاكتئاب والتجاهل النقدى، حبيسًا فى مصحة "هاى بيتش العقلية"، ثم يزور هذه المصحة الشاعر الإنجليزى الشهير"ألفريد تنيسون"، لرعاية أخيه المصاب بالملانخوليا، ومنذ هذه اللحظة ستشتبك حياته بالمصحة وبصاحبها الطبيب "ماثيو آلن". الرواية المليئة والمفعمة بشاعرية الروائى؛ تتناول دوار السقوط الذى حل به وهلاوسه وذوبان هويته ، وصولًا إلى جنونه الكامل. فالرواية على الرغم من اعتمادها على وقائع تاريخية دقيقة؛ إلا أن خيال"آدم فولدز"، الشاعرى يقدم شخوصها ويحاول وهو يتتبع مجازه أن يحاصر العالم كله داخلها.
