وهي تخرج من غرفته توقع تعثرها في السجادة أو اصطدامها بالكرسي المجاور للباب أو احتباس صوتها وهي تودع أمه، لكنها عبرت الصالة وخرجت بهدوء ساكني البيت ومعرفتهم بكل شيء فيه. قرر في زيارة رنا التالية أن يفرض إيقاعه أكثر، ولا يؤجل أي سؤال يخطر في باله: "لماذا اختارته، كيف عرفت أنه في البيت كما قالت، ماذا قالت لأمها عندما عادت بقميصه، كيف لم تقلق من وجود أمه وتعاملت معه على أنه أمر طبيعي" وسيظل السؤال الذي قد يقوله وهو يضحك ليخفف من حدته: "لماذا لا تخاف ولا تقلق من أي شيء؟"
ما إن استيقظ حتى رأى المعدية على الحائط. نزل من السرير ووقف وسط الغرفة ليتأكد من أنه لا يحلم. وعندما شكّ في أنه مازال في الحلم خرج من غرفته وعاد إليها وفتح الشباك وأطل منه. مستحيل أن يكون في حلم إلا إذا كان من الأحلام التي ترى نفسك فيها وأنت تحاول أن تستيقظ وتتخلص مما تحلم به.
كل الأوصاف التي قالتها ناهد عن المعدية رآها على الحائط: جزء للركاب وجزء للحيوانات وعربات الكارو، واصطفت السيارات في الممر ولمح قططاً تدور في المكان كأنها أتت عن طريق الخطأ. كلهم بدوا شهوداً على وجود المعدية في غرفته دون أن يقدر على سؤال أي منهم. ورأى يحيى ركاباً ينظرون في اتجاه الحائط المقابل كأنهم يفكرون في سر وجوده ومتى ارتفع وكيف ستستمر الرحلة مع بقائه، بينما انشغل آخرون بالنظر إلى أعلى حيث من المفترض أن تكون سماء فلم يجدوا سوى سقف بمصباحه المطفأ.
