يقول المؤلف بأن روايته هذه تدور حول عام لعله أقسى وأفجع الأعوام في تاريخ بلاده. انه عام 1941 الذي تعتمد فيه مصير البشرية جمعاء، فضلاً عن مصير وطنه. ففي ذلك العام تقررت مسألة ما إذا كانت الفاشية التي نخرت كل أوربا تقريباً ستواصل السير على طريقها نحو السيطرة العالمية أم أن المؤلف مع الثوار سيأخذون بخناقها ويوقفونها. ليسرد المؤلف، مستعيناً بما حوته الذاكرة، أحداث حرب في صيف وخريف وشتاء عام 1941 في أرض وطنه، في غابات بيلوروسيا وفي حقول سمولينسك، في ضواحي موسكو الملفعة بالثلوج حيث شهدت موسكو في ذاك العام أحداثاً محزنة كانت تسمع فيها هدير المدافع الألمانية وفوجئ بسكانها بحرب أفنت الحجر والبشر. يسرد المؤلف ما شاهده في هذه الحرب من بدايتها حتى نهايتها، ويروي كل ما رآه حتى سقوط برلين معنوناً كتابه "الأحياء والأموات" لأن النصر في هذه الحرب ضد الفاشية حققه ليس فقط ولئك الذين وصلوا أحياء إلى برلين، بل وأولئك الذين ضحوا بحياتهم في هذه الحرب العظيمة.
