في هذا الكتاب يبحث المؤلف عن لغة الشعر عبر سبع عشرة قصيدة من العصر الجاهلي إلى اليوم، جهد فيها الشعراء ليقيموا عالماً جديداً على أنقاض الفناء في المعركة الرهيبة بين الإنسان والطبيعة، أو بين الإنسان والإنسان، فيصل في بحثه جناح اللغة بجناح الشعر. فالشعر هو أساس لتاريخ الوجود الإنساني، وليس مجرد تعبير عن روح الثقافة، والشعر هو اللغة الأولية لشعب تاريخي، والشعر هو حوار بين البشر عبر القول والسمع. والشعر ليس لعباً فهو يركز على الوجود الإنساني ليصل بقائله وسامعه إلى طمأنينة يصحبها نشاط في جميع القوى والعلاقات، والشعر بديل عن فناء الإنسان، وإعلاء لقدر الإنسان بإعلائه للغته. والشعر يضفى على اللغة معنى أعمق وأنقى من كلمات القبيلة والعلماء والساسة والإخباريين واللغويين، والشعر وعلى جمالى ينشأ من مساءلة الشعر في الحاضر، ليفصح عن وجوده في موضوعية ترد إليه كيانه، في وعى الجيل الحاضر.
