في العالم العربي، آلاف من الأدباء والفنانين التقدميين والثوريين، لا يتسع المجال لتعداد أسمائهم أو حصر أعمالهم، ولكنا على يقين من أن "محمد مندور كان واحداً من بينهم إن لم يكن على رأسهم. في هذا الكتاب يستعرض "هنري رياض" سيرة حياة وأعمال محمد مندور ونزعته الإشتراكية الأصيلة. فهو الكاتب الذي ظل يكتب أكثر من خمس وعشرين عاماً، يدعو إلى نزعة إنسانية تحررية تقدمية وثورية بقصد تغيير الأوضاع في العالم العربي، فكتاباته تقوم على فلسفة جديدة حديثة للحقوق الإنسانية اتسم بها عنصر الستينات من القرن المنصرم، لذلك ارتبط كفاح مندور الأدبي بكفاحه السياسي أو على ألأصح بالكفاح السياسي للشعوب العربية في تلك الآونة، فحارب الرجعية العربية من ناحية، كما حارب الإستعمار من ناحية أخرى، بل ذهب يرسخ مبادئ الإشتراكية في أذهان الشبيبة العربية، ويعمق أصولها في أفئدة تلاميذه وقرائه الكثيرين.
وبناءاً على ما تقدم يشتمل الكتاب على جميع المراحل التي ساهمت في تكوين محمد مندور كأديب ومناضل منذ النشأة وحنى الوفاة (1907- 1965) في مصر/ مينا القمح/ وتأثره وتأثيره في أدباء عصره في مجال النقد والشعر والمسرح وآثاره الأدبية ومنها: "النقد المنهجي عند العرب"، و"في الميزان الجديد" و"الأدب ومذاهبه"، و"الأدب والنقد"، وكتابه "النقد والنقاد المعاصرون" وغيرها من كتب ساهمت في رفد الحياة الأدبية والثقافية في مصر ببوادر نهضة فكرية شارك فيها مندور العقاد وطه حسين ولويس عوض ويحيى حقي والمازني وعيرهم في شتى فنون الأدب.
