هو أديب وكاتب روائي لبناني راحل. ولد في بحرصاف المتن عام 1911. نال البكالوريا عام 1928. كان متمكنا من اللغة العربية وبدأ بالكتابة للصحف منذ عامه الثامن عشر. درس في كلية القديس يوسف في بيروت ثم واصل دراسته للحقوق في جامعة دمشق. له الكثير من المؤلفات الروائية والقصصية والشعرية. صنفت روايته طواحين بيروت واحدة من أفضل مائة رواية عربية. توفي عام 1988 إثر سقوط قذيفة على مبنى السفارة الإسبانية حيث كان متواجدا مع صهره السفير وابنته، فقتل على الفور مع ابنته الكاتبة ساميا توتونجي.

هذا الكتاب، أهو سيرة شخص عاش وتعذّب، وأحب وكتب؟ أم حكاية جيل، وتاريخ عصر؟ أقصة هو؟ أم مسرح؟ أم ديوان شعر؟ أم ملحمة؟ "حصاد العمر" هو كل ذلك معاً، إنه تتويج لأعمال الأديب الكبير الذي عرفه الناس في "الصبي الأعرج" و"الرغيف"، و"طواحين بيروت"، وفي "السائح والترجمان"، و"قوافل الزمان". كتبه في الثانية والسبعين، على سمت فريد لم تعرفه كتب السيرة، فهو ينطلق فيه من الجذور المتشابكة في أعماقنا، من الازدواجية التي هي في كل فرد منا، من الصراع بين "الأنا" و"الأنا" في داخلنا، مستعيراً أسطورة شِقّ وسَطيح -واحد في اثنين واثنان في واحد- يترافقان من حقل الطفولة ببراءتها وطيشها، إلى حقل الدراسة بكدّها وطموحها، إلى حقل القلم وراء الكلمة المبدعة، إلى حقل الديبلوماسية وراء الحق والعدالة، إلى حقل الوطن بحثاً عن الهوية والمصير، إلى خضمّ الحياة بكل ما يعج فيها من أحداث وأعاصير. ومن خلال العائلة والضيعة، والمدينة والمجتمع، والسياسة والعالم - وقد طوّف فيه سفيراً نيفاً وربع قرن- يرتفع صاحب "حصاد العمر" فوق الزمان والمكان، وفوق الجبابرة والأقزام، إلى جو التعاطي الحر، المطلق بين الإنسان وأخيه الإنسان، في حوار يمتزج فيه الوقار والسخرية، وسياق يتناوب فيه النثر والشعر على قلم لم تزده الأيام إلا نضجاً وطلاوة وسحراً.
