نبذة النيل والفرات: لقد عنيت هذه الدراسة بأحد أبرز شعراء العراق الذين أسسوا لحركة تحديث النص الشعري وهو الشاعر العراقي النجدي محمد البريكان. وقد استطاع الباحث من خلال دراسته لنصوص الشاعر المنشورة أن يصل إلى مجموعة من النتائج توزعت بين فصول هذه الدراسة، ولعل أهمها هي أن الشاعر هو أحد أعضاء المدرسة الشعرية التي أرست قيماً فنية وجمالية جديدة في الشعر العربي المعاصر. فهو على صعيد موسيقى الشعر يعد ممن دخلوا دائرة تجريب المزج بين البحور في القصيدة العمودية وذلك في القصائد التي كتبها في فترة مبكرة من تاريخه الشعري بالإضافة إلى استخدامه للقافية بشكل متنوع إذ نجد تقفية داخلية وأخرى خارجية في القصيدة الواحدة، تم تواصلت نزعته التجديدية على مستوى موسيقى الشعر حتى وصلت إلى تشكيل القصيدة بنظام إيقاعي متميز يشتمل على ظواهر إيقاعية عديدة كانت كلها تصبّ في خدمة المستوى الدلالي للقصيدة. وعلى صعيد اللغة فإن البريكان من الشعراء الذي يتمتعون بإمكانية لغوية هائلة وبحساسية قوية إزاء المفردة التي ينتقيها لبناء الجملة الشعرية، وقد أثبتت الدراسة أنه مال إلى عنصر الخطابية في البناء اللغوي للنصوص الشعرية القديمة (الشعر العمودي) لكن خطابيته هذه لم تكن نابعة عن رغبة في إيصال موقف إيديولوجي أو توجه في إنشاء أغراض شعرية تتطلب ذلك الأسلوب الشعري كالمديح والذم وغيرها... وإنما كانت صورة طبيعية من صور التعبير الرومانسي الذي كان سائداً في تلك الفترة، ولذلك نجد سيادة ضمير المتكلم بظهور الانفعالات الذاتية بشكل واضح في النص.
