نبذة النيل والفرات: أدت مملكة الحيرة التي ظهرت في منتصف القرن الثالث الميلادي على يد ملوك السلالة اللخمية التي أسسها عمرو بن عدي دوراً فعالاً ومؤثراً في رسم الخارطة السياسية والإقتصادية لشبه الجزيرة العربية في العصر الجاهلي، بوصفها مملكة ذات كيان سياسي مستقل من الناحية العملية، ومرتبطة بالإمبراطورية الساسانية كواقع حال، وعلى ضوء ذلك كان لا بد لها أن تتخذ سياسة تتماشى طبيعة هذا الواقع وطبيعة المنطقة ومن يوجد بها من القبائل العربية. لذا، فقد حددت تلك العلاقات وفقاً لقوة ومكانة القبيلة، فنلاحظ دخول الحيرة في صراعات سياسية تارة وجنوحها إلى السلم تارة أخرى، ويستمر هذا الحال حتى نهايتها كمملكة وهذا يعكس بطبيعته مديات كثيرة مرتبطة بسياسة ملوك الحيرة أو بالقبائل العربية أو بالمؤثرات الخارجية ولأهمية ذلك كان إختيار هذا الموضوع. ركز المؤلف في هذا الكتاب على منطقتين مهمتين هما نجد وشرق الجزيرة العربية؛ لأن فيهما أقوى تجمع للقبائل العربية، التي أثبتت لملوك الحيرة والإمبراطورية الساسانية قوتها ومكانتها في تلك الأصقاع، وذلك من حيث العُدة والعدد وسيطرتها على منافذ التجارة والأسواق، فكان لا بد من وضع السياسة المناسبة للحد من قوة هذه القبائل والتعامل معها بشكل يرضي جميع الأطراف. وفي هذا السياق، اقتضت ضرورة البحث أن يقسم الكتاب إلى سبعة فصول وخاتمة، تناول الفصل الأول: الحيرة من ناحية التسمية والموقع الجغرافي والنشاة، الفصل الثاني: فقد تناول علاقات القبائل النجدية بالحيرة، الفصل الثالث: فركز على طبيعة العلاقة بين القبائل العربية القاطنة في شرق الجزيرة العربية ومملكة الحيرة، الفصل الرابع: فقد عرض الجوانب الإقتصادية والحضارية، الفصل الخامس: تناول النظم الإدارية والعسكرية، الفصل السادس: يتضمن مملكة الحيرة وعلاقتها الحربية مع القبائل، الفصل السابع: العوامل الإقتصادية والحضارية في طبيعة العلاقات بين مملكة الحيرة وقبائل نجد وشرق الجزيرة العربية، ثم جاءت الخاتمة لتعطي أهم النتائج التي توصل إليها البحث.
