إن مفهوم الوسائط المتعددة يشير إلى تكامل وترابط مجموعة من الوسائط (الصور الثابتة والمتحركة، الرسوم الثابتة والمتحركة، النصوص المكتوبة والمنطوقة، والموسيقى والمؤثرات الصوتية) يتم عرضها باستخدام الكمبيوتر، وتتميز بالمرونة حيث تتيح التجوال Navigation، والتنقل والتفاعل مع المحتوى المعروض أياً كانت صورته أو صيغته، لجعل العملية التعليمية أكثر فاعلية وأبقى أثراً، بحيث يؤثر كل وسيط منها في الآخر وتعمل جميعاً من أجل تحقيق هدف واحد أو مجموعة من الأهداف. ويعود ظهور مفهوم الوسائط المتعددة إلى استخدام مدخل النظم في التعليم، وقد ارتبط المفهوم في بداية ظهوره بالمعلم, وكيفية عرضه للوسائط التي يريد أن يستخدمها, والعمل على تحقيق التكامل بينها, والتحكم في توقيت عرضها، وإحداث التفاعل بينها وبين المتعلم في بيئة التعليم. والتعليم المبني على الوسائط المتعددةInstruction Based Computer Multimedia غير من دور كلٍ من المعلم والمتعلم في العملية التعليمية، وكذلك غير من شكل حجرة الدراسة إلى بيئة جديدة مصممة لتلائم احتياجات وميول واستعدادات المتعلمين. ويعتبر مفهوم الوسائط المتعددة من أكثر المفاهيم ارتباطاً بحياتنا اليومية والمهنية الآن ولفترة مستقبلية، حيث أصبح بالإمكان إحداث التكامل بين مجموعة من أشكال الوسائط، عن طريق الإمكانات الهائلة للكمبيوتر، كما أصبح بالإمكان إحداث التفاعل بين هذه الوسائط وبين المتعلم في بيئات التعليم. كما أنه كان من الصعب تخيل كيف كانت الوسائط المتعددة في الأيام التي سبقت ظهور برنامج فلاش Flash، لقد كانت بلا حيوية ومملة، كما كانت التفاعلية مع برامج الوسائط المتعددة محدودة من قبل المتعلم، بالإضافة على عدم توافق الوسائط المعروضة مع بعضها البعض. فبرنامج فلاش Flash سهل إنتاج برامج وسائط متعددة غنية بالمميزات والتي لا يمكن نشرها على الإنترنت فحسب بل أيضاً في أقراص مضغوطة، الإذاعات، وحتى الهواتف المحمولة، ويعرفك هذا الكتاب قدرات وأدوات تأليف فلاش والتي لا يحدها سوى قدرتك على التخيل والابتكار، وعندما تنهيه، ستكون قادراً على إنتاج برامج الوسائط المتعددة بثقة.
