يتناول هذا الكتاب ما طرأ على المجتمع السعودي بعد بناء الدولة، ومداخيل النفط. فمن حيث بناء الدولة كان قيام الدولة السعودية متميزاً، إذ جاء نتيجة تحالف سياسي مع الديني (الحركة الوهابية)، الأمر الذي حكم على النظام السياسي بأن يكون على ما هو عليه، على الرغم من التباين الذي حدث مبكراً بين القيادة السياسية والقيادة الدينية. ومن الناحية الثانية، تعرض المجتمع السعودي إلى تحولات عميقة بفضل مداخيل النفط، وما سببته هذه المداخيل من احتكاك متبادل بالعالم. الأمر الذي ترك أثاراً اجتماعية واقتصادية كادت تجرف معها المواريث لولا صدقيتها وقوتها. لكن هذا لا يمنع من انتشار العادات الاستهلاكية والزبونية والبيروقراطية وانهيار أخلاقيات العمل والعمالة الأجنبية والبطالة الوطنية الفقيرة. يقع الكتاب في 127 صفحة، ويتألف من مقدمة وأربعة فصول، ويحاول أن يجاوب على سؤال إن كان لا يزال المجتمع السعودي يضم بين فئاته فئات لا تزال وفيّة للموروث الاجتماعي الذي يظن أنه اندثر في المراحل الأولى من تأسيس بناء الكيان.
