تتضح أهمية التحرير الكتابي في أنه عملية تفكير، فالإنسان كما قيل يفكر بقلمه وتبدأ عملية التفكير هذه منذ الوهلة الأولى التي يهم فيها الكاتب الإمساك بالقلم إلى أن يفرغ منه مراجعة وتنقيحاً، كما تبرز أهمية التحرير الكتابي من الوجهة التعليمية من كونه جماع فنون اللغة ففيه يستطيع المتعلم توظيف ما تعلمه من دروس مختلفة (نحوية، إملائية، أدبية، بلاغية... إلخ) عند كتابته لموضوع التعبير، كما أن التحرير الكتابي هو الوسيلة الرئيسة إلى الآن لأداء الإمتحانات العامة في جميع أقطار الوطن العربي، ومن ثم فإن الضعف في إتقان مهاراته سيكون سبباً بلا شك في عدم مواصلة الطالب لتعليمه في المراحل الأعلى، حيث إن هذا سيكون معرقلاً له عن تحقيق هذا الأمر.
نتيجة الأهمية السابقة كان هذا المؤلَّف الذي يسعى إلى تدريب الشادين إلى تعلم الكتابة نظرياً وتطبيقياً من خلال التعريف بعلاقاتها باللغة من جهة، وبالتفكير من جهة أخرى، وكذا عناصرها ومكوناتها وفنونها، وإستراتيجيات تعلمها، مع تدعيم ذلك بنماذج إجرائية تطبيقية كي يعم النفع والفائدة.
ولذا فقد تناول الكتاب الحالي ستة فصول دار الفصل الأول منها حول العلاقة بين اللغة والفكر، أما الفصل الثاني فقد تناول تحديداً لبعض المفاهيم المرتبطة بالتحرير منها: التدوين، والإنشاء، والتأليف، والتعبير الكتابي، والكتابة وتضمن الفصل الثالث مكونات التحرير العربي، أما الفصل الرابع فقد اشتمل على تصنيفات التحرير الكتابي من حيث الهدف والوظيفة، ثم سمات الكتابة الوظيفية والإبداعية، وتناول الفصل الخامس كيفية تطبيق إستراتيجيات ما وراء المعرفة في تنمية مهارات التحرير الكتابي، وأخيراً تناول الفصل السادس تطبيقات عملية لكيفية توظيف إستراتيجيات ما وراء المعرفة في تنمية مهارات التحرير الكتابي.
