لا يستطيع هذا الكتاب أن يزعم لنفسه أنه يهدف إلى إعادة بناء وتوجيه الدراسات والبحوث التي تناولها علم الاجتماع القانوني، أو حتى تلخيص واستعراض النظريات والاتجاهات والآراء المختلفة التي قدمتها الكتابات العديدة في الموضوع، ولكنه بالأحرى يسعى إلى محاولة الإسهام في مناقشة بعض المشكلات والقضايا التي مازالت تدور من حولها جهود العلماء واهتمامات الباحثين، وإلى إلقاء الضوء على بعض الجنبات التي نعتقد أنها ألزم جوانب العلم وانفعها للدارسين والمشتغلين به، وإذا كان قد وضح من كلامنا أن هناك حالة من القصور التي مازال علم الاجتماع القانوني يعانيها في مرحلته الراهنة، فيترتب عليه أن محاولتنا سوف تكون محاولة فاحصة وانتقادية معًا، على أمل أن يساعد التحليل الذي نقدمه في تمزيق حاجز الصمت، فنقدر على قول بعض ما لم تفصح عنه كثير من الكتابات السابقة.
ووفقًا لذلك يتكون الكتاب من خمسة أبواب هي كالتالي:- الباب الأول: القانون في الثقافة والمجتمع، الباب الثاني: علم الاجتماع القانوني، الباب الثالث: الاتجاهات العامة للدراسة الاجتماعية للقانون، الباب الرابع: الواقع والمثال في تفسير الظاهرة القانونية، الباب الخامس: التوجيه الايديولوجي في علم الاجتماع القانوني.
