عنى علماء النفس بدراسة الأحلام وتفكيكها وتحليل رموزها، وتعددت النظريات والتفسيرات التي تفسر آليات الحلم وكيفية حدوثه وانعكاس ذلك على حياة الفرد السوي. ولا شك أن الإنسان قد شغل بهذا الموضوع وافتتن به منذ عصور سحيقة، حيث القى بعض العلماء الضوء على أحلام الإنسان فيما قبل عصور التاريخ حيث افترض هؤلاء وجود وسيلة عقلية أولية ساهمت مع عوامل أخرى في تفسير التطور الحضاري، وقد نظروا إلى قصص الأحلام التي تذكرها الإنسان البدائي بأنها بمثابة رأسمال قصصي فكري مخزون، ساعد في عملية تطوره. وفي كتابه الذي يقع في ثلاثين فصلاً يعرض الدكتور "علي كمال" آلية حدوث الأحلام ويعرض للنظريات والمعتقدات القديمة والحديثة، ويبحث في المنظور النفسي للأحلام، ويتناول محتوى الحلم وتفسير الحلم على ضوء علم النفس الفرويدي، ويتطرق إلى المنظور النفسي عند الأقوام البدائية والمنظور البيولوجى النفسي ويبين الفروق بين أحلام الذكور وأحلام الإناث وأحلام الحيوانات قبل أن يعرض لوظائف الأحلام وفوائدها والأحلام والأمراض.
