يتناول الباحث دراسة التطور العضوي والجنسي والاجتماع للإنسان. ودراسته تستقي معلوماتها من ثلاثة مصادر رئيسية: 1-المعلومات من الماضي مستخرجة من المستحاثات ومن بقايا الأسلاف. 2-المعلومات المتوفرة عن سلوك الحيوان المبنية على الملاحظات المطولة في أنواع الحيوانات وبخاصة القردة والسعادين. 3-المعلومات المستقاة والمجمعة من الملاحظات البسيطة المباشرة لنماذج سلوكية شائعة بين جميع البشر ذوي الثقافة المعاصرة، وتسهيلاً لعمل القارئ قام المؤلف بتجاوز التفاصيل وبعض التعابير التقنية مفضلاً التركيز على جوانب الحياة البشرية التي لها ما يوافقها في المخلوقات الأخرى من نشاطات كالإطعام والتنظيف والنوم والقتال والتناسل والعناية بالصغار.
إني عالم بالحيوان وأقول بأن القرد العاري هو حيوان. لذا فإنه لمن العدل تجاه قلمي وتجاه نفسي أن أرفض تجنبه وذلك لأن بعضاً من سلوكياته معقدة وجديرة بالاهتمام. إن عذري في ذلك هو أن الإنسان مهما بلغ من أتساع المعرفة يبقى قرداً عارياً رغم ذلك.
