نبذة النيل والفرات: علوم الأرض هي مجموعة العلوم التي تتعلق بدراسة نشأة الأرض وتكونها وعلاقتها بالكون وتغيراتها تحت تأثيير العوامل الداخلية والخارجية، كل ما يتعلق بكوكب الأرض يقع ضمن إهتمام علوم الأرض وبالتالي فهو قسم من علوم الكواكب Planetary Science (والعلوم الطبيعية)، حيث يكتسب كوكب الأرض أهميته من كونه الكوكب الوحيد التي تعرف وجود الحياة على سطحه حتى الآن. هناك دوماً مقاربات وطرق إختزالية أو كلانية Holistic لعلوم الأرض، الفروع التاريخية الرئيسية لعلوم الأرض كانت تستخدم الفيزياء الجيولوجيا، الرياضيات، الكيمياء وأخيراً علم الأحياء لتشكيل فهم كمي للمناطق الرئيسية للأغلفة الأرضية ضمن النظام الأرضي. وقد تضمن هذا الكتاب أربعة فصول، ففي الفصل الأول، يبحث في النظام الشمسي ومكوناته والمجموعة الشمسية، والفصل الثاني يبحث في الغلاف الجوي وطبقاته وتأثيره، أما في الفصل الثالث فإنه يبحث في المواد الأرضية الصلبة، المعادن والصخور والتربة، أما في الفصل الرابع فإنه يبحث في تاريخ الأرض ودينامية الأرض والتراكيب الجيولوجية.
