"كان عليّ أن أنقد الأمر مساءً حين تخرج صفية إلى محل البقالة بعباءتها الكالحة الرديئة وملابسها الرخيصة. وقفت أمامها فابتسمت كعادتها ومدت يدها مصافحة إياي، فبرزت أسنانها الناتئة. نظرت إلى شعرها الخشن غير المسرح، وشفتيها الغليظتين المتشققتين، وعينيها المدورتين الغائرتين، ووجهها المجعد، وخديها الذابلين، والشعر النابت بوضوح تحت ذقنها. اقتربت منها، وجدتها تثير الشفقة، ماذا تفعل فتاة بكل هذه القبح في هذا العالم؟!
قبل أن أتكلم، قالت بصوتها الأجش وهي تنثني من الضحك: "حلمت البارحة بأنك تتزوج من فتاة لم يخلق الله مثلها في الجمال, كنت أرقص في عرسك وأوزع الحلوى والخبز على الناس. كان حلماً سعيداً سيتحقق، وسترزق بابن جميل مثلك يناديني عمتي صفية". ومسحت بيدها بحنان طاغ على شعري وابتعدت وهي تضحك مسرورة. اعتراني، خزي وحزن شديد ووخز ضمير، وشعرت بالخجل من نفسي، كيف أمكنني أن أفكر في إيذاء هذه المخلوقة المسكينة؟ ألا يكفي ما تعانيه في هذه الحياة حتى أكون أنا سبباً في شقائها؟ كان محمد هو الشرطي الذي يراقب كل شيء. أخبرته بأنني لا أستطيع إيذاء هذه المسكينة. قال محمد: "يبدو أننا تمادينا في هذه اللعبة، لقد بدأناها لعبة بريئة والآن نحاول إيقاع الأذى بالآخرين، إنني لا أثق فيهم مطلقاً".
