مع تطور حياة الإنسان وظهور الحضارة لم يقتصر الإهتمام بالتخطيط للمستقبل على الأنبياء ورجال الدين والعرافين والدجالين فحسب بل انضم إلى قائمة المهتمين بالمستقبل المفكرين والعلماء والكتاب والروائيين الذين أتاح لهم خيالهم الخصب أن يرسموا صوراً مذهلة للمستقبل القريب والبعيد وان يبدعوا في تخيل الكثير من الأشياء والأحداث.
وبدأت التربية تتنبه إلى أهمية المستقبل ودراسته وضرورة تقديم الصيغة التربوية التي تلائم تغيرات المستقبل ويأتي التوجيه الحكيم بأن "نربي أبناءنا تربية مستقبلية واعية لأنهم مخلوقون لزمان غير زماننا" مؤشراً واضحاً على حتمية أن تنحو التربية نحو المستقبل في أساليبها وطرقها وأدواتها ومحتواها وأن تسعى إلى رسم الصورة المستقبلية التي نرجو أن يكون عليها أبناؤنا.
من هنا نشأت فكرة هذا الكتاب الذي يعد محاولة لتأصيل العلاقة بين التربية ودراسة المستقبل وتوجيه نظر الباحثين في مجال التربية إلى أهمية دراسة المستقبل وضرورة تبني رؤية مستقبلية واضحة المعالم في كل ما يصدر من جهود بحثية هدفها الأساسي المستقبل وليس الماضي.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب في خمسة فصول يعرض الفصل الأول منها للدراسات المستقبلية من خلال طرح عام لمفهوم الدراسات المستقبلية وطبيعتها ونشأتها وتطورها التاريخي، ويعرض الفصل الثاني لأنواع الدراسات المستقبلية والمنهجيات والأساليب والأدوات المختلفة التي تستخدمها الدراسات المستقبلية، ويعرضها الفصل الثالث بالتفصيل تقنية دلفى "Delphi Technique" ويبين الفصل الرابع أهمية دراسة المستقبل في التربية وعلاقة التأثير المتبادل بين التعليم والمستقبل.
واختتم بعرض الخصائص التي ينبغي أن تتوافر في التربية المستقبلية وجاء الفصل الخامس ليقدم أحد نماذج الدراسات المستقبلية في التربية وهي الوثيقة التي أصدرتها المنظمة العربية للتربية والثقافة والعلوم بعنوان مدرسة المستقبل.
