سعى هذا العمل إلى التقريب ما بين المذاهب الإسلامية، على قاعدة المشتركات فيما بيننا وهي كثيرة، وعلى رأسها أحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومن هنا كانت الدعوة إلى "منهج جديد في دراسة الحديث النبوي" كما بين في دراسة مستقلة في هذا الكتاب. ودفع التهمة بحق الشيعة الإمامية، القائمة على أن الشيعة الإمامية يهتمون بأحاديث الأئمة عليهم السلام ويتجاهلون أحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. والتأكيد على أن بعض مرويات الشيعة في الحديث النبوي هي صادقة صحيحة نتيجة هذا التطابق في أحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في "الصحاح" و"السنن" عند أهل السنة والمجاميع الحديثية" عند الشيعة. وأخيراً خدمة الفقهاء من كافة المذاهب الإسلامية، وتسهيل إطلاعهم على الأحاديث النبوية المشتركة من مصادرها الشيعية والسنية. وهكذا فقد جاء العمل في هذا الكتاب على قسمين: القسم الأول: ما هو مروي من أحاديث نبوية عن طريق الأئمة عليهم السلام في "الكتب الأربعة"، وهو مشترك مع السنة. وأما القسم الثاني: فالمروي من أحاديث نبوية عن طريق الصحابة، وهو مشترك ما بين الشيعة والسنة أيضاً. ويشتمل القسم الأول على (22) كتاباً، يبدأ بكتاب "فضل العلم" وينتهي بكتاب "المكاسب"، وكل كتاب يحتوي على عدة أحاديث نبوية مشتركة. وأما القسم الثاني ففيه (23) كتاباً، يبدأ بكتاب "فضل العلم" وينتهي بكتاب "الحدود". وأما مصادر هذا العمل فهي أمهات المصادر الحديثية عند الشيعة والسنة، وقد تم إيراد أسماءها في الفهرست المخصص للمصادر والمراجع في آخر هذا الكتاب.
