من المتطلبات الاساسية للحصول على درجة علمية في مستوى الماجستير او الدكتوراه ان يتقدم الطالب ببحث علمي تتكامل عناصره في مخطوط يعده الطالب ويتقدم به حسب قواعد واصول متعارف عليها بين المختصين في المجال الاكاديمي لتخصص الطالب، وحسب اجراءات وتعليمات تنص عليها اللوائح الجامعية. لقد تطورت في المؤسسات الاكاديمية الجامعية بخاصة تقاليد وقواعد عامة توجه عمل الطالب في اعداد متطلبات رسالة في مستوى الماجستير، او اطروحة في مستوى الدكتوراه، واصبحت هذه التقاليد والقواعد ملزمة للطالب وعليه ان يتقيد بها حتى تكون رساله او اطروحته مقبولة، ويستطيع ان يستكمل بها متطلبات الحصول على الدرجة العلمية. يقدم هذا الدليل مجموعة من الارشادات والقواعد التي يمكن ان يسترشد بها الطالب في مراحل اعداد خطة البحث ، وتطبيقه ، واستخراج النتائج ، وكتابة المخطوط بصورته النهائية ، وجدير بالذكر ان هذه الارشادات والقواعد تنطبق بدرجة معقولة في مجالات متعددة واجراءاتها الخاصة بها ، وتتوقع من طلبتها ان يتقيدوا بها . الا ان المحاولة في هذا الدليل ان تعرف الطالب بقواعد واسس عامة تاخذ بها معظم الجامعات. وتجدر الملاحظة هنا ان كثيرا من الطلبة وهم يعدون لمتطلبات رسالة او اطروحة لا يكونون على اطلاع جيد بالقواعد والاجراءات التي يجب اتباعها فنجدهم يرتكبون اخطاء تتجلى في مخالفتهم لهذه القواعد والاجراءات. وهذا يعني ان اطلاع الطالب المسبق على محتويات الدليل سيجنبه كثيرا من الاخطاء ومواطن اللبس التي قد يتعرض لها اثناء عمله في الرسالة او الاطروحة.
