تجرى أحداث الرواية في أرخبيل صغير من أربعة جزر مقابل شاطئ البحرين. في جزيرة(كن) يعيش النمل والنحل حياة مفعمة بالنشاط المثمر والتعاون، أما في الجزر الأخرى فتعيش أنواع مختلفة من الثعابين و العقارب السوداء والصفراء و السلاحف والحرباء. تستمر الحياة سعيدة هانئة في جزيرة النحل حتى تعلن ملكتها أول قرار خاطئ (إنجاب أقل وعسل أكثر)، وبموجبه يوجه الجميع جهودهم نحو مضاعفة إنتاج العسل وإهمال كثرة الإنجاب. وبالطبع يتسرب الخبر إلى الجوار فتغزو الأفاعي السامة وحلفاؤها الجزيرة وتستعبد سكانها ويتحول النحل والنمل إلى خدم لدى سكان جزيرة إبليس. لكن المقاومة لا تلبث أن تنفجر وتوضع خطة محكمة مشتركة بين النمل والنحل والسلاحف تنتهي بمعركة مروعة اصطف فيها الحق والنبل في جهة والقوة الغاشمة في جهة أخرى... من أجواء الرواية: " وانفجرت عناقيد النحل الحمراء كالبركان فملأت الجو بسيمفونية من الأزيز والطنين وراحت الجموع المتدفقة تطير حول الجزيرة فتظللها ثم تدور في حلقة تضيق وتضيق حتى تحط فوق التراب وتتعانق مع النمل ثم تطير ..."
